Electrolytes are one of those health buzzwords that gets thrown around constantly — on sports drink labels, in fitness forums, by that one friend who swears by their post-workout routine. But what actually are electrolytes, and why should you care?
The Basics: What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water. The main ones your body relies on are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate. They're found in your blood, sweat, and urine, and they play a role in virtually every bodily function.
When we talk about "electrolyte balance," we're really talking about the precise concentration of these minerals in your body's fluids. Too much or too little of any one of them can throw your system off.
What Do They Actually Do?
Electrolytes are involved in:
- Fluid balance — sodium and potassium regulate how water moves between your cells and bloodstream
- Muscle contraction — calcium and magnesium are essential for muscles to contract and relax properly
- Nerve signalling — electrolytes carry electrical impulses that allow your nerves to communicate with your brain and muscles
- pH balance — they help maintain your blood's acid-base balance within a very narrow range
- Energy production — magnesium alone is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, many of which are tied to energy metabolism
How You Lose Them
You lose electrolytes primarily through sweat, but also through urine, breathing, and digestion. Exercise, heat, illness, alcohol, and caffeine all accelerate the loss. A single hour of moderate exercise can deplete significant amounts of sodium and potassium — more than most people realise.
Why Sports Drinks Aren't the Answer
Traditional sports drinks do contain electrolytes, but they also come loaded with sugar — sometimes as much as a can of soda. That sugar can cause energy crashes, bloating, and unnecessary calorie intake. For most people, a clean electrolyte supplement without the sugar is a far better option.
The Electrobite Approach
We built Electrobite around six essential electrolytes at clinically relevant doses — not the trace amounts you'll find in most competitors. Zero sugar. Zero artificial ingredients. Just the minerals your body needs, in the amounts that actually make a difference.
